Validity of teleneuropsychological assessment among older adults with and without neurocognitive impairment

Özet

Aims: Despite growing interest in remote neuropsychological assessment, studies focusing on reliability and validity of teleneuropsychology (TNP) are still relatively limited. The current study, therefore, focused on the validity of videoconference administration of neuropsychological tests in terms of its ability to distinguish healthy individuals from those with cognitive impairment. Method: The sample consisted of 152 participants with an age range of 50-83 years. Of the total sample, 105 were cognitively healthy, whereas the remaining 47 were diagnosed with either mild cognitive impairment or early-stage Alzheimer"s dementia. All participants underwent both face-to-face (FTF) and teleneuropsychology (TNP) assessment in a counterbalanced order. The neuropsychological assessment battery included several tests of attention and executive functions, memory, language, and visuospatial functioning. Participants" performance in FTF and TNP conditions was compared via repeated measures ANCOVA, controlling for age. Results: The results of ANCOVA tests revealed significant main effects for the diagnostic group and non-significant main effects for administration condition (FTF vs. TNP). All interaction effects were nonsignificant, except for the verbal trail making test. Discussion: The cognitively healthy group performed better than the neurocognitive impairment group in all tests. Performance within each group did not significantly differ based on assessment modality (FTF vs. TNP). Conclusions: The results suggest that teleneuropsychological assessment can successfully distinguish between cognitively impaired and healthy individuals. The findings therefore provide support for TNP assessment for patients with neurocognitive disorders, especially when FTF assessment is not possible, or contraindicated.
