Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a complication of great consequence following total joint arthroplasty, placing a tremendous burden on physicians and patients alike. Given the frequency at which these procedures are performed, as well as the ever-growing demand for them, the prevalence of disease is similarly expected to increase. Current trends in the literature demonstrate an increasing financial burden imposed by PJI, as well as the increasing incidence of drugresistant organisms as a cause of PJI, further compounding the difficulty of management of this complication. The aim of this review was to provide the latest updates in the prevention, treatment and diagnosis of PJI, with a view to identifying areas in need of further research.
