OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the therapeutic potential and side effects of indomethacin for the treatment of symptomatic polyhydroamnios. MATERIAL- METHOD: 3 gravidas with symptomatic polyhydroamnios were managed with maternal indomethacin therapy. RESULTS: Such therapy was started during 30 weeks of gestation and lasted for 10 days (range 7-13 days). Interval between the end of the therapy and the delivery was 30.3 days (range 14-42 days). In all cases, there was considerable decreases in amniotic fluid index. No constriction of the fetal ductus arteriosus has been developed. In one case there was increase in maternal bilirubin level. No complication has been developed in the newborns. CONCLUSION: Although there is known side effects of indomethacin therapy, it may be beneficial in symptomatic polyhydroamnios for pregnancy prolongation with close monitorization.
