Microbiota research has a current and broad field of application in forensic studies. It is critical to use microbiota research effectively, understand the factors that can alter the human microbiota, and select appropriate aims for research. The 16S rRNA gene, which is the least mutated and known for its specificity, is the gene region used in microbiota research. For this purpose, next-generation sequencing technology and bioinformatic analyses are utilized. Microbiota analyses conducted with next-generation sequencing technology provide various opportunities for the advancement of forensic sciences. Microbiota has many forensic uses, such as postmortem identification and postmortem interval estimation. In this section, research methods related to 16S rRNA gene sequencing and determination of microbiota profile in the field of forensic medicine are discussed.
