Özet

There still is not a consensus on the anaesthetic technique whether regional or general anaesthesia during carotid endarterectomy (CEA) operations because both offer some advantages and disadvantages. The most important advantage of regional anaesthesia is the reliable and easy monitoring of the neurologic status. As an alternative to cervical plexus block, cervical epidural anaesthesia can also be chosen. In a CEA operation, where cervical epidural anaesthesia was performed as the anaesthetic technique, a transient ischemic attack followed by a focal convulsion was observed after the clampage of the carotis. An intraluminal shunt was placed immediately (in 2.5 minutes), and the neurologic status reversed without any sequela. In addition, no haemodynamic instabilities were detected throughout the operation. After the operation the patient reported that she felt no pain, no anxiety and she didn't remember any 'sleep period' during the operation.
