Leukemia subsequent to breast cancer treatment may be due to chemotherapy with alkylating agents and radiation treatment. In this study 2 patients with leukemia after treatment for breast cancer are presented and the literature is reviewed. Evaluation of the numerous cases treated for breast cancer has shown that radiotherapy and alkylating agents, especially melphalan, increase the risk of leukemia. The relative risk of leukemia and the radiation dose to the active marrow is not well established. In conclusion although there is a known increased risk of leukemia after radiation treatment and chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide-based regimens, this is not at the level of compromising beneficial standard treatment.
