ABS TRACT It's been theorized that by removing a large volume of plasma, therapeutic plasma exchange
(TPE) may decrease or remove pathologic substances such as autoantibodies, immune complexes,
and cytokines that are believed to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of systemic
autoimmune diseases. The prognosis of autoimmune diseases with varying organ manifestations have
improved considerably in recent years, with the introduction of novel effective biologic agents and
aggressive therapy schemes, and studies so far have not provided evidence for benefit of TPE over
various other treatment modalities. TPE is indicated only in severe cases, which show rapid progression
despite immunosuppressive therapy and/or biologic agents, (such as in patients with renal
involvement, acute generalized vasculitis, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, pulmonary, cardiac, or cerebral
involvement).
