In this study we evaluated the efficacy of a combination therapy with omeprazole, amozicillin and clarithromycin for treatment of patients with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) associated gastritis and duodenal ulcer disease. Fifty patients, who were distributed randomly into two groups received two different doses of clarithromycin daily for 15 days, while amoxicillin and omeprazole were administered as 1 gr bid for 15 days and 20 mg. bid for one month respectively. Patients were called for follow up examinations following six weeks of maintenance treatment with famotidine. All duodenal ulcers were found to be healed completely and gastric activation decreased in both groups after therapy. Eradication rates were 76.2% in the 1st group and 72.4% in the 2nd group, who had received 250 mg. bid and 500 mg. bid clarithromycin, respectively. In conclusion, we have determined that both combination regimens are quite effective and safe for the treatment of H. pylori infection and no significant difference was observed between the two different doses of clarithromycin administered. However, long term usage and higher cost are major drawbacks for this combination therapy.
