Özet

Restoration of blood flow following ischemia causes complex mechanisms resulting in tissue damage which is known as ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. The process affects oxygen-dependent tissues and organs. As oxidative stress plays an important role in this event, the protective effects of various antioxidative agents have been studied. Carnosine has antioxidant properties, mainly based on its suppressive effects on reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, numerous experimental studies were performed revealing the beneficial effects of carnosine in I/R injury of the tissues and organs including liver, kidney, heart, brain and testis. However, further research is required for its clinical application.
