Kadınların Tıp Fakültesine Girişinin 100. Yılı

Kadınlar, yüzyıllar boyunca sağlık, şifa, tedavi ve bakım alanında hep var olmakla birlikte kurumsal eğitime ve tıp eğitimine kabul edilmeleri uzun zaman almıştır. Kadınlara daha çok ebelik, hemşirelik, öğretmenlik gibi mesleki alanlar uygun görülmüş, fakat hekimlik alanına girmeleri çok daha uzun yıllara mal olmuştur. Toplumda, bu alanda da, cinsiyet temelli ayrımcılık, kadınların önünde görünmeyen bir duvar, yükselmelerini engelleyen görünmez bir cam tavan (1) olarak çıkmış; eğitime ve tıp mesleğine girişlerini de geciktirmiştir. Kadınların tıp fakültelerine kabulü ve hekimlik mesleğini icra etmeleriyle ilgili dünyada olduğu gibi Türkiye’de de benzer tartışmalar yaşanmıştır. Türkiye’de kadınlarının tıp fakültesinde eğitim alma hakkı, onlara bahşedilmemiş, uzun bir mücadele sonucunda kazanıldı.

Elinizdeki bu kitap aynı başlıklı sergiden yola çıkarak Kadınların Hekim olma mücadelesine yaşanmış örneklerle katkı sunmaya, belgelemeye çalışıyor.

100th Anniversary of Women's Entry to the School of Medicine

 

 

INTRODUCTION: Breaking the Glass Ceiling

 

Women have always been present in the fields of health, healing, treatment, and care for centuries, but gaining acceptance into institutional and medical education took a long time. Women were considered more suitable for professional fields such as midwifery, nursing, and teaching, while entering the field of medicine took many more years. In society, gender-based discrimination created an invisible barrier, an unseen glass ceiling (1), hindering their progress and delaying their access to education and the medical profession. The acceptance of women into medical faculties and their practice of medicine has been a subject of similar debates in Turkey, just as it has been worldwide. In Turkey, the right of women to receive medical education at the medical faculty was not bestowed upon them but was achieved through a long struggle (2)...(...).

In our exhibition and booklet, dedicated to the centenary of the Republic, where we respectfully commemorate the long-fought battle for women's rights and their entry into the medical profession, the featured female doctors represent many more women. After the pioneering steps we have discussed above, women have increasingly established themselves in various fields, including medicine and healthcare, proving themselves as strong healthcare professionals dedicated to serving human and public health. We pay our respects to these pioneering female doctors and all women professionals from different disciplines who have broken through the invisible glass ceiling created by gender inequality.
