Course Description:
This course will focus on in vivo and in vitro approaches to genetic modification of human cells for therapeutic purposes. Lectures will cover basic aspects of non-viral and viral vector design and the application of genetically modified cells in a wide range of clinical scenarios ranging from treatment of monogenic diseases to cancer immunotherapy. Special focus will be given to the biotechnological development processes in cell and gene therapy applications. The course will comprise weekly lectures introducing the subject in-depth, followed by discussion of important research articles in that specific field.
Evaluation will be based on in-class participation (not attendance!) during the whole term and presentations at the end of the term.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
After the course, the student should be able to;
1. Explain techniques that are used for genetic modification of human cells.
2. Use their molecular biology knowledge to design vectors for gene therapy of cancer or monogenic diseases.
3. Have an understanding of the scientific and regulatory requirements of clinical trials in cell and gene therapy.
4. Have an understanding of the safety and ethical issues concerning cell and gene therapy.
