Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of inherited degenerative disease of outer retina causing progressive loss of vision in both eyes. Unfortunately no effective treatment exists for this group of diseases. Recently, Transcorneal Electrical Stimulation (TES) therapy has been described, which includes electrical stimuation of the retina in both eyes with the customised energy once in every week for at least 3 months. This therapy is shown to induce secretion of neuroprotective growth factors in the an imal studies. The results of prospective studies performed in humans are also being reported. In this pilot study the results of 10 patients with diminished visual fields are demonstrated. Both standard 30-2, and manual visual field testing was performed with best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) measurements. Quality of life questionnaire was also completed after the end of three months. In 7 patients BCVA increased 3-5 letters. The visual field increased in 9 out of 10 patients. In all 10 patients subjective quality of vision increased. The patients preferred to continue their treatment. TES therapy may be promising to stabilise vision and prevent visual field loss in eyes with retinitis pigmentosa, and may be offered to patients before serious vision loss occurs.
