Background: Why did you apply for this project? What were the needs you have addressed?
We applied for this project to address critical gaps in cardiovascular surgery education. Surgeons struggle to stay updated due to time constraints,
economic barriers, and limited access to high-quality training resources. Current educational materials lack visual quality, comprehensive current content,
and accessibility.
To overcome these issues, we propose the Digital Operating Gallery, a high-quality, systematic digital learning platform offering detailed surgical
guidance. Additionally, a Digital Surgical Logbook will standardize the documentation of surgical experience, ensuring skill validation. A Digital Surgical
Atlas will enhance visual learning and serve as a quick pre-operative reference. Furthermore, the Standardized Data Manual will establish uniform
indicators for scientific analysis, enabling better treatment comparisons.
This project eliminates educational inequalities, accelerates knowledge access, and improves surgical training and documentation. By leveraging digital
tools, we aim to create a globally recognized, high-quality, and accessible resource for cardiovascular surgeons.
Objectives: What did you want to achieve by implementing the project?
Through this project, we aimed to modernize and enhance cardiovascular surgery education by creating accessible, high-quality, and standardized digital
resources.
Our primary goal was to bridge the gap in surgical training by providing a Digital Operating Gallery, ensuring surgeons can quickly learn current surgical
techniques without barriers like time, cost, or language.
Additionally, we sought to improve experience documentation with a Digital Surgical Logbook, allowing surgeons to track and validate their training
systematically, as there is there is no universal system for documenting surgical experience in detail
The Digital Surgical Atlas was designed to enhance visual learning, making complex procedures easier to understand and recall.
Lastly, the Standardized Data Manual was developed to establish common indicators for scientific analysis, enabling better and standard treatment
comparisons.
By implementing this project, we aimed to improve education accessibility, enhance surgical competency, ensure data standardization, and ultimately
contribute to better patient outcomes through more effective surgical training and evaluation.
Implementation: What activities did you implement in your project?
The project implemented several key activities across five main work packages:
1. Cardiovascular Surgery Digital Operating Gallery: Developed a digital video-based training platform for high-quality educational content. This included
planning meetings, defining video content formats, recording and editing surgical procedures, and integrating them into an online portal.
2. Digital Surgical Logbook: Created a standardized system for tracking and documenting surgical experiences. This involved defining key variables,
structuring a digital record system, and testing its implementation.
3. Cardiovascular Surgery Operating Techniques Atlas: Designed a visual reference tool that includes detailed surgical illustrations and theoretical notes.
Activities included format determination, drawing/illustration planning.
4. Manual for Outcome Indicators and Variables in Cardiovascular Surgery: Developed a standard data set for comparing surgical outcomes across
institutions. Activities involved defining key outcome variables, structuring the manual, and conducting review meetings.
5.Project Management & Dissemination:Ensured coordination between partners, quality control, budget monitoring, and dissemination of results.
Results: What were the concrete outputs and other results of your project?
The project produced four key outputs, developed through collaboration with numerous cardiovascular surgeons, ensuring a product of scientific
consensus. The Digital Operating Gallery is a video-based training platform, featuring expert-led demonstrations of advanced surgical techniques, making
cutting-edge knowledge widely accessible. The Digital Surgical Logbook standardizes the documentation of surgical experience, allowing structured
validation of skills through a consensus-driven approach. The Cardiovascular Surgery Techniques Atlas compiles detailed illustrations and theoretical
insights, reflecting collective expertise to serve as a critical preoperative reference. Lastly, the Manual for Outcome Indicators and Variables establishes
standardized criteria for evaluating surgical outcomes, enabling reliable comparative and standardized research. These outputs result from a collaborative
effort, incorporating the expertise of multiple surgeons across institutions, ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and scientific rigor.
