Project Abstract

Aim: The aim of this project was to develop an anti-aging and moisturizing

product formulation that protects the skin against blue light, UVA and UVB rays.

Another important goal was to design an environmentally friendly formulation, in

order to significantly reduce water and CO2 footprints and overall environmental

impact. Different brochures have also been planned to deliver valuable information to

consumers and to selling point personnel who help the consumer to make product

selection.

Materials and methods: As a result of literature search and pre-formulation

studies a preliminary formulation was designed, appropriate type and amount of

sunscreen materials were selected and tested with the tool of provided by BASF. As

a result of these formulation studies a final oily product formulation was selected for

further stability and efficacy testing. Stability tests were conducted 4 different

conditions and samples were tested at predetermined time points. Efficacy testing was

monitored by measuring moisturization potential and protection against blue light.

Result: According to BASF Sunscreen Simulator, SPF was 38, in-vitro UVA

protection factor (ISO 24443) 18.3 and critical wavelength was 373 nm . Skin

moisture level increased by 73.2 % according to the corneometric measurement made

by Courage & Khazaka MPA 580 device while placebo caused only a 23.8% increase.

The occlusive characteristic of the product led to a reduction of TEWL measurement

by %7.14.

Conclusion: Due to the broad spectrum filters use in the formulation, the product

protects from UVB,UVA and blue light.This formulation was designed with oils and

oil-soluble active ingredients to comply with waterless beauty concept. Water is added

before use to turn it into a lotion. Corneometric measurement proved that product has

a very good moisturizing effect. Patent eligibility search was done and the formulation

was found to be eligible, further action will be taken for registration.
