Research integrity (RI) issues – including cases of misconduct and high prevalence
of questionable research practices (QRPs) – have gained increased attention
worldwide (Crocker and Cooper 2011; Gopalakrishna 2021). In Europe, normative
guidance requires institutions to provide RI courses, but provides little direction
on their content (ALLEA 2017). Those involved in research in Europe consider
appropriate goals of RI training to include both the promotion of RI-related
knowledge and the development of researchers' moral behaviour and the
underlying character and professional virtues (Pizzolato and Dierickx 2021). Few
European courses, however, pay attention to researchers’ moral character and
professional habits - or why they are important or how to strengthen them - and
merely focus on understanding the principles guiding the scientific method and
RI rules (Adbi et al. 2021). There is little attention to what we consider to be a
‘good researcher’ or what acting with integrity means in specific situations. If we
consider ‘integrity’ to reflect desirable habits and embodied values or virtues
such as trustworthiness, honesty, and intellectual humility, a challenge in RI
education is how to foster their development.
