Proje Özeti

STRIVE aims at developing a ?fast and reliable Point of Care (PoC) kit?, able to detect COVID-19
exposure both in symptomatic individuals and silent carriers. The kit will employ the loop-mediated
isothermal amplification (LAMP) technique, a direct method alternative to PCR, to detect viral RNA.
Since LAMP technology is already successfully applied in diagnostics, the project will focus on
specializing it in the early diagnosis of COVID-19 and building around it a ?strategic infrastructure
based on multimodal data analysis workflow able to provide insights about the disease transmission
and progression and able to quickly adapt primers-based systems in the presence of newly developed
strains. The STRIVE project will particularly aim at the engineering of a specific device for
maintaining optimal conditions for the LAMP reaction. In addition, the device must be able to provide
automatic detection of the color test result, to eliminate human error in determining this result. The
device must therefore automatically allow the execution of the test and directly provide an
unequivocal result at the end of the reaction. The STRIVE partnership will cooperate to the design,
prototype, engineering, industrialization and distribution of the diagnostic kit as well as to the
exploitation of the data collected during validation to provide citizen stratification according to chance
of infection, definition of guidelines for screening programs, and simulation of the results for different
authority decisions. To mitigate the problem of in-house production and inability of large suppliers to
satisfy increased demand for test systems, the developed kit will be ?produced and tested across 5
different European countries on 5500 patients samples in total. This will allow us to diversify the
workload, increase the sustainability of each country and strengthen the network of industrial and
academic partners able to quickly develop and deploy solutions in a distributed, but simultaneous
manner.
